Bawku; The Sound Of Gunshots Is Now Like An RnB Music To Our Ears – A Friend Of A Plus Narrates

A friend of Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus has asserted that the sound of gunshots at Bawku is now like an RnB music to their ears.

A Plus shared a WhatsApp chat of his friend on Tuesday, 20th September 2022.

According to A Plus friend who works as a nurse at Bawku, they witnessed heavy exchange of automated riffles from 3pm 11pm yesterday.

He added that, Government has imposed measures like curfew which is 6 to 6, ban on motor riding, band on smock wearing but these measures have proved insufficient and still innocent young lives have been wasted.

“Both feuding factions are confined to their respective territories and you dare not trespass. My heart is bleeding Kwame . I’m nurse and i can say on authority that innocent vulnerable people have died due to aggravation of their chronic diseases especially hypertension.” The nurse added.

The sound of gunshots is now like an RnB music to our ears because we live with everyday.” He sadly said.

“The military have managed to tame the gunfires for almost 30 minutes otherwise I would have called you to hear gunshots and trust me you will think it’s Russia-Ukraine war.” He told A Plus.

He said that the conflict is about the skin of the town and two tribes are fighting each other ie Mamprusis and Kusasis. Both factions have their respective explanations as to who owns the skin.

Background To Bawku Conflict

Bawku is a municipality in the north-eastern corner of Ghana. It is also the site of a long-standing conflict dating back to British colonialism in 1930s over who should rule the area.

At the heart of the conflict is the “Bawku skin affair.” Skin here, does not refer to colorism or race politics, but over who should be chief. It’s about political power. Two groups—the Mamprusis and the Kusasis—are at the heart of the conflict over political power. The violence between these communities is intermittent and has resulted in the loss of human lives and the destruction of properties.
