His Excellency, Former President John Dramani Mahama, has been trending today following his comment on the current state of the judiciary and the need to change the current leadership of the Judiciary, in other words, change the Chief Justice. Mahama made that comment in reaction to the recent and consistent unanimous decisions from the Supreme Court Justices.
Today, a popular NPP private legal practitioner, Lawyer Gary Nimako, has tackled the Former President for the statement he made. Lawyer Gary explained that the comments made by the Former President are very unfortunate. He added that that comment and call for a change in the Chief Justice emanates from the defeat the NDC suffered in the 2020 election which was confirmed by the Supreme Court.
Gary Nimako explained that Mahama’s pain can be inferred from the fact that the Supreme Court gave a unanimous ruling on their election petition. However, Gary Nimako still insisted that the National Democratic Congress merited that ruling from the Supreme Court. He argued that Mahama had led his supporters on into believing that they won the election. And even with that, he could not present to the court, a single pink sheet to prove to the court that he indeed has won. He, therefore, explained that he disagrees with Mahama that, a new Chief Justice must be selected.
“I did not understand Mahama when he said that just because of the 7-0 judgment, there must be a change in the Chief Justice position because of a show of political bias. The inference is coming from the fact that they lost the 2020 election petition. You told Ghanaians that you have won the elections and on reaching the court, your position was that, you did not win and nobody won. How do you want the court to assist you based on that statement? You could not even send a single pink sheet.”
