In the preseason friendly played this morning between the two teams, Chelsea was defeated by Arsenal. This was the culmination of their tour of the United States, during which they each competed against a different team before to meeting in the finals. The blues were completely dominated in a match that ended with a score of 4-0. Even if it is simply a friendly, you cannot allow yourself to be dominated in a game played against your opponent’s team in such a manner.
A significant number of Chelsea players appeared to be lacking concentration throughout the game. There was absolutely no sense of urgency, desire, or determination present at all. It was anticipated that Christian Pulsic would deliver a “Captain America”-worthy performance, but he did not. Since Pulsic is from the United States, his countrymen traveled in large numbers to witness his performance.
The one bright spot in an otherwise disappointing game was the appearance of substitute Kalidou Koulibaly. It appeared as though he was able to give the team the much-needed balance that they lacked in the first half of the game. Even though he only played for a few minutes, he stood out despite the fact that everyone else in the game was terrible. Fans of Chelsea can only hold out hope that he will prove to be the solution once the league season begins.
