The two sons of the legendary Abedi Pele, are always the scapegoats anytime the Black Stars of Ghana performs abysmally. Many have even called for their heads, demanding they leave the team. Is this fair? Are they the easiest prey or longevity leaves fans getting fed up from lack of trophies?
Jordan was booed off the pitch in Ghana’s first leg of the two World Cup ties against Nigeria in Cape Coast.
To begin with, the performances of the siblings at club level is monumental. Andre won the Qatar league with Al Saad. He finished second in the topscorers chart with 15 goals behind Micheal Olunga.
Jordan on the other hand didn’t score as many as his brother, but a new role assigned to him by Patrick Viera has seen the player evolve. His game now is making sure he covers so much ground, both attack and defence. He was so good he was rewarded with a contract extension.
Moreover, since their debuts on 7th August, 2007 and 5th September 2010 for Dede and Jordan respectively, they have scored a combined 42 goals for the Black Stars. Andre with 23 and his younger sibling with 19. Jordan’s fierce strike against Japan in the ongoing Kirin Tournament places him level with his father and legendary Osei Kofi in the all time leading goalscorers for the country.
The technical handlers never leaves them out of the squad simply because they feel there are no better players than the Ayew brothers. We might have good players out there, maybe they are not just better than Andre and Jordan.
Rather than chastising and putting them out in the sun to dry, let’s rally behind them and the team. They and the team as a whole need our full support in order to perform admirably in both this year’s World Cup and next year’s Afcon.
