Evans Otumfou, the General Secretary of the Ghana Mobile Money Agents Association (MMAAG), has accused the media of misrepresenting the leadership in reporting on the group’s meeting with President Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House.
“Based on the way the information is presented in the media over there, our people will not support that particular media reportage.” On Tuesday, May 10, he told 3FM Sunrise, “That is not exactly what we went to communicate.”
They discussed the security of mobile money agents and their workers, the expense of establishing a business, and the necessity for government support, according to Evans Otumfou, but the media’s coverage of their meeting with President Akufo-Addo will not make anyone happy with the MMAAG executives.
Despite news reports to the contrary, he stated that their does not support the E-Levy policy or its implementation.
When he met with the President at the Jubilee House, he told Alfred Ocansey on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, that the leadership of MMAAG merely meant they supported public education on E-Levy.
“Not that we support the E-Levy in general; we meant support for the E-education Levy’s component.” “We do not support any tax policy that has a negative impact on our enterprises and the Ghanaian people,” Otumfour stated.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told Mobile Money Agents that the government will consider their concerns over the e-levy. On Tuesday, May 10, the MoMo Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) paid him a courtesy call at the Jubilee House in Accra.
Mr. Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to the association for committing to work with the government to make the E-levy a success. “I am also very encouraged and appreciative for this offer of assistance in ensuring the successful administration of this contentious tax,” the President remarked.
“I believe it is appropriate that stakeholders like you voice your concerns as you did, and that these concerns are taken into account by government so that when the law is finally shaped like it has been, it is one that is meaningful for both the state and the private sector operatives who are in this area,” he continued.
Members of the MMAAG informed Mr. Akufo-Addo that they will support and implement the e-levy. They regarded themselves as supporters of the policy rather than opponents. The e-levy went into effect on May 1st.
“Recently, we have witnessed government’s plan to introduce an Electronic Transaction levy which, as an association, we have raised a number of concerns but as we speak now, yesterday, we were in a meeting with the Ministry of Finance, Ghana Revenue Authority, and other relevant stakeholders and most of our concerns regarding the electronic transfer levy have been addressed,” Evans Otumfou, the Association’s General Secretary, said during the meeting with Mr Akufo-Addo.
As a result, we believe that, as an association, it is critical that, when necessary, harsh measures be taken as a nation. “The charge has now become law, and all citizens are required to pay.” As a result, we are here as allies rather than adversaries.
We also applaud the administration for lowering the e-tax from 1.75 percent to 1.5 percent and for the extensive list of exclusions granted by the levy. We had hoped for a further reduction because of the potential impact on our business.
We implore you and the Minister of Finance to take swift action to address the issues that the levy has posed to us as business agents. “For example, deductions made at the agent’s account in an attempt to transfer monies from the agent’s account to their bank account for withdrawals and other agent-related activity.”

“We are grateful and appreciate your passion, commitment, and hard work toward an aggressive digitization of our economy with its associated impacts on us as a business , particularly Mobile Money agents,” Otumfuo stated.
