According to the National Media Commission, most alleged victims of abuses do not use the right process to report their cases . Speaking on behalf of the National Media Commission, the boss himself, Mr. Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo , mentioned that in Citi Tv Caleb’s issue , the NMC realising that Citi TV was not reporting any issue to them had to reach out to them by their own . He explained that he received information that CITI TV had rather sent letters to many persons or institutions who could not have jurisdiction to resolve the issue at hand .
The NMC boss also mentioned that many persons who speak on the radio and accuse the government for instilling a culture of silence vent their spleens on air with some wrongly quoting the constitution. He exclaimed that normally the government in power would have such accusations from the opposition party .
The NMC boss was speaking on the recent World Press Freedom Ranking and he advised media stakeholders to properly acquaint themselves with the laws of the country .
TV3’s Alfred Ocansey analysed government’s response to the ranking and he revealed that the Ministry of Information’s release did not tackle why other countries performed better than Ghana despite the methodology used . Alfred Ocansey also lamented on the fact that government was yet to comment on why journalists were attacked by law enforcement officers.
Besides , the renowned Journalist exclaimed that the release was also short of an explanation on why political leaders made death threats to some journalists and he requested that the case of Ahmed Suale should have been mentioned in the press release by the government.
Per the government response , we believe government would collaborate with stakeholders to improve the economic status of journalists as well as collaborate with stakeholders to fight against fake news . Besides, government will collaborate with the National Media Commission to deepen the coordinated mechanism on the safety of journalists in Ghana.
