The Ghanaian comedian and actor, Clement Ashiteye, popularly known as Clemento Suarez has boldly sent a message to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and caused a stir online. He was complaining about the deduction of the E-Levy and how he was being taxed double on the same transaction.
Clemento Suarez said that Vodafone Ghana has always been his preferred network for mobile money transactions because they don’t charge him anything when he sends money to friends and family. However, the E-levy is making him confuse because he is being taxed twice on transactions. The comedian also said that anything he receives money in his mobile money wallet deduction is applied.
And he doesn’t understand why they still charge tax on goods he has been ordering online. This is because the goods he is purchasing online are taxed already so charging him E-Levy is very painful. This is what Clemento Suarez wrote on his official Instagram account:
“Dear President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,
The brightness of the day has allowed me to write you this letter. How are you? I hope by the grace of God you are as fit as a fiddle. Nana, I know other networks charge money transactions that is why I chose Vodafone Ghana. When you send money from Vodafone to Vodafone, there is no fee charged.
From Vodafone to any other network is also free. And I have been living my life cool like that. Nana, I pay tax on the money I receive in my wallet, I pay tax on things I patronize (goods/services). Please if you can help me, kindly explain to me the reason I should pay tax on the money you have already collected tax on. Please who is E-levy and what job has he done for me to be charging me?
Please tell people who will be expecting me to send them money via my Vodafone cash that until I receive a reply from you, I’m closing my mobile wallet and going back to the cash system. Thank you for reading this letter. If you will look at God’s face and collect people’s money by force. Give m back my money”.
Some Ghanaians after coming across this letter said that they love the boldness of the comedian. Others said that how the government is deducting taxes anytime they perform mobile money transaction is very painful. It is like some of the deductions are not what they said will be applied if they transact business with mobile money.
