A lot of supporters from the New Patriotic Party and commentators on social media struggling to establish a contradiction in the statements of former President Mahama on the impact of Covid-19 on the African continent when the same man told President Akufo-Addo and his government to stop blaming Covid-19 for their woes.
I don’t see any contradictions in the two positions of President Mahama. First of all, when you come across two positions that appear to contradict, you pause and check the context within which those statements were made.
As a whole, the continent of Africa was hard hit even access to vaccines due to vaccine nationalism because the continent could not develop and produce vaccines to meet its demands except to rely on the benevolence of other advanced countries.Â
All African countries have had their unique opportunities challenges when Covid hit the world. Some were without adequate medical facilities. Ghana could not have claimed not to have medical facilities because a lot of investment in the medical field was done by John Mahama when he was president.
As a result, we even had other high-profile personalities from other countries in Africa coming to attend to their health needs in Ghana when they could not travel outside of the continent.
The various countries within the continent have had different financial capacities to deal with Covid. In Ghana’s case, we accumulated Ghc33 billion, the equivalent of $3 billion to deal with Covid-19 specific challenges.
What those claiming contradictory positions from the former President need to ask themselves is, how many African countries got this quantum of resources to deal with Covid?
The government of Nana Akufo-Addo received $3 billion in financial support and to date, we hardly could tell what it used the money for, while at the same time, they are running away from accounting to us.Â
Compared to our neighboring countries which were consistent comparative countries in the analysis of the NPP when in opposition, Ghana had failed woefully to handle its economy and shifted all the failures to Covid-19.
I don’t think it comes close to contradiction when one points out these and insists that the government of Ghana under Nana Akufo-Addo had resources that it could have used intelligently to limit the impact of Covid on the economy.
I think those struggling to establish contradictions must come close to understanding the wasteful nature of the government with Covid funds.
Until the government comes clear to account for what it used the funds to do specifically, no one can hold a brief attempt to hide behind a statement that looks at the general impact while looking also at the specific opportunities Ghana had to show its resolve in standing up during the pandemic.
