English is not a mother tongue for most people in the world. It was designed to be a medium of instruction and learning while also it is recognized as a medium of verbal interaction world wide. The reason most countries teach English to their children in schools is because many countries especially in Africa were colonized.
Countries that never experienced colonization like China, Korea and more are still catching up with the language hence there are teaching posts for people who would like to teach English internationally.
In SA, many people level English to intellectuality. A person’s IQ level is measured parallel to how they can fluently speak the language. Sizwe Dlomo caused a debate on social media after he corrected a sentence where historic was labelled as ‘a’ instead of ‘an’.
Sizwe, who is a radio personality in SA, said the correct way to say it is ‘an historic event’. In the comments people debated, proposing that ‘an’ is used if the word starts with a vowel but words like hour, honor and more are exempted to this rule.
