Ramaphosa terminates employment contract of SAPS top official, says it is in country’s best interest

In other news, the internecine civil war between the police Commissioner and the Minister has finally come to an end. Khehla Sitole has finally been fired. Bheki Hamilton Cele wins this round.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has terminated the employment contract of the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) General Khehla Sitole with effect from 31 March 2022. According to news reports, this was a “Mutual agreement.”

The termination of Khehla’s contract comes after some brewing tension between him and police Minister, Bheki Cele. Calls had been mounting for Ramaphosa to act as the tension was affecting the state of security. Last week, Cope expressed concern and blasted President Cyril Ramaphosa for “turning a blind eye” amid the leadership impasse that has gripped the South African Police Services. Finally Ramaphosa has heeded the calls and fired Sitole.

In a statement released by the Presidency, it is stated that the mutual termination of Khehla’s contract is in the best interests of the country. Ramaphosa says he is grateful to “General Sitole” for the constructive conversation they have had over the termination of his contract. An announcement will soon be made as to who will fill the position as the National Commissioner following Khehla’s departure.

According to public opinion, Gauteng MEC for safety, Faith Mazibuko is the right candidate to fill Sitole’s now vacant position. “Khehla Sitole is gone, Phakama MEC Faith Mazibuko, it’s time that the SAPS is led by a woman with integrity and hard working,” a Twitter user said.

Khehla Sithole was moving with a different kind of impunity. He defied a High court order, didn’t get along with his Executive Authority and had IPID lodge two complaints against him for his recalcitrant behaviour.

It looks like the National Police Commissioner position is a poisoned chalice and many don’t even finish their term. First it was Jackie Selebi Riah Phiyega, Bheki Cele, Khomotso Phahlane and now Khehla Sithole is also being pushed out by the current administration.

Who do you think will be our next National Commissioner?
