Bodies lay scattered across the street and in people’s yards and homes after police officers exchanged fire with almost two dozen robbery suspects in Johannesburg’s Rosettenville suburb.

Police cordoned off 25 suspects in the area following what has been called a foiled cash-in-transit robbery on Monday evening.

Officers shot and killed at least eight suspects while several more were injured in the shootout.

One police officer was killed and five others were injured and were airlifted to a local medical institution.

Suspects were scrambling for cover as a police chopper flew overhead to shoot at them from the skies. Some of the suspects returned fire and one of the officers in the helicopter was struck by a bullet. It is unclear whether this is the officer who was fatally shot.

The police minister who visited the scene said police arrested eight suspects, the majority of whom were from Zimbabwe and KwaZulu-Natal.

One suspect, who is from Botswana, is said to be the mastermind behind the botched operation. His name has been on the police most wanted list following previous robberies he has allegedly conducted.

Police recovered several AK47 rifles and other firearms used by the suspects at the scene, as well as six stolen vehicles.

A resident in the area described the shooting as being like a wild west shootout near the South Rand hospital.

Other witnesses told Scrolla.Africa that the scene was akin to a warzone.

“I was scared but I couldn’t help it. I took photos and videos of the sound of the gunshots from my cell phone,” said one onlooker, adding that the shooting went on non-stop for eight minutes.

“It was so scary but interesting to hear the sound of gunshots that you can only hear when watching a movie.”

Grace Langa, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson who was at the scene, confirmed that at least eight suspects were killed during the shootout.

“There were 12 rifles found and about 100 bullets were found on the scene,” she said.

The IPID said they have taken control of the crime scene. Langa said seven suspects remain on the run.
