The world is still reeling from the Tinder Swindler; who scammed women in Europe posing as a rich tycoon. His shenanigans have been documented in a movie currently showing on Netflix.
Enter Bibhu Prakash Swain; who not only woed and romanced his conquests; but went on to marry 18 of them in India.
Swain allegedly believed in “soulmates and true love;” or so he told at least 18 women; who became his wives long enough; for him to con them and jump to the next.
Swain had allegedly married and conned women across India; before his arrest; weeks before he married two more victims.
Grandpa Swain; used his diminutive structure into fooling his conquests into believing that he was a 51 year-old hunk when all he was; was a 67 year-old senior citizen.
According to the police; in a status driven India; Swain took it one step further; by faking his credentials to become a doctor. This status allowed him to prowl the internet to persuade lonely professors; lawyers; medics and even a paramilitary officer; to tie the knot.
He finnessed; a huge salary for himself; used fake ID cards and appointment letters; to bolster his credentials and family background.
According to Senior Police Official; Sanjiv Satpathy; Swain did all this to get his hands on his conquests’ hard earned cash; and to romance them.
After being married for a few days; Swain used to make excuses to borrow his new wives’ money or jewellery; to help him with an emergency.
Outside his fantasy life; Swain was married in 1978; with three children; two are doctors; while the other is a dentist. Swain was training as a lab technician; but dropped out; had a fallout with his family and moved town.
Swain was burned by one of his disgruntled conquests; who smelt a rat; scrolled through his phone; found the other wives and contacted them; she then alerted the police. His arrest put an end to a decades long scam.
