More Trouble for Ken Ofori-Atta As Eighty Majority Members Ask For His Sack

The economic situation in the country keeps getting worse by the day. Inflation keeps hitting new highs and the Cedi’s strength keeps dropping against many other currencies across the world. Currently, the exchange rate is over 15 Ghana Cedis to the dollar.

Many are those who have called on the president of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to sack the finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and bring in a more competent person to help stabilize the economy, but all their calls have fallen on deaf ears. The sign we get from the president is that the current finance minister under whose watch the Cedi has performed abysmally, is the only one who can serve in that capacity.

One of the notable persons who in the recent past have implored the president to fire the current finance minister and give way for a more qualified person to fill that position, is the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama. His plea however was met with fierce opposition from some members of the party in power.

Surprisingly, some New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentarians have added their voice to the current economic mess we find ourselves in, and this time, they have asked the president to sack the finance minister, who happens to be his cousin.

The majority members through their spokesperson, Andy Appiah-Kubi who is the NPP member of parliament for the Asante Akim North constituency, sent this plea to the president via a press conference that took place today, the 25th of October at Parliament House.

They by that press conference has sent a word of caution to the president to relieve his cousin of managing the national purse or risk losing their support for government business going forward. He also noted that members of the majority will not participate in any government business the budget hearing until their demands were met.

That members of the majority has joined in the fight in the way that they have just done is an indication that the current dire situation we found ourselves in doesn’t spare anyone. There is too much suffering in the economy, and we as citizens are in this together irrespective of party affiliation. It is therefore imperative to sometimes put politics aside and speak to the issues without fear or favour.

Some are of the opinion that this call from the majority members have come too late, but there is a saying that, “It is better late than never.” We hope and pray that government consider this deeply, since this time it is not coming from the opposition but from their own members.
