New Study Finds Link Between Parenthood Age And Children’s Risk Of Bipolar Disorder

Scientists find link between age of parenthood and the risk of bipolar disorder in children | Euronews

According to new research, having children at an early or late age may make them more likely to have bipolar disorder.

The disorder impairs a person’s capacity to perform daily tasks and is characterized by abrupt changes in mood, energy, and activity levels.

These most recent findings, which were published in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology, open the door for further investigation into the risk factors contributing to its high heritability.

In order to determine whether there was a correlation between parental age and the risk of bipolar disorder in children, a team of researchers from Spain, Italy, Australia, and the Netherlands examined studies involving a total of more than 13 million participants, of whom over 217,000 had the condition.

When compared to parents between the ages of 25 and 29, they discovered a “U-shaped” curve, indicating greater risks for both younger and older parents.

However, she stressed, prospective parents who fall within these age ranges shouldn’t be concerned despite the elevated risk.

“We can say that both earlier and older parental age is associated with an increased risk of bipolar disorder,” study lead Giovanna Fico told Euronews Next.

However, she stressed, prospective parents who fall within these age ranges shouldn’t be concerned despite the elevated risk.

“I don’t think they should be very worried. The effect is moderate. But there is an effect”.
