Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iuadaeorum (INRI) is an acronym that stands for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” It revealed that Jesus was a Jewish leader who had become a follower of Jesus. It was solely the brainchild of Pontius Pilate, and the soldiers just followed his commands without question.
An inscription criticizing him was put above his head after the nailing. They didn’t understand he was the Messiah until the entire planet Earth was engulfed in darkness. The people who crucified Jesus were taken aback by what they had done to him and couldn’t believe what they had done. They understood it was the son of God at that point.
While Pilate’s charge was meant to be offensive, the abbreviation serves as a reminder that it is true: Jesus is our king, who came to save us from sin and death. His throne was the cross, and he reigns mercifully and lovingly over us.
