Ban Small Scale Mining If You Want To End Galamsey – Murtala Mohammed Tells Akufo-Addo

Murtala Mohammed, MP for Tamale Central has opened up on one of the ways to end galamsey. The country has seen her waters polluted at the rate of illegal mining in the country. Despite the raids and attempts by the government to end the illegality, it has still persisted years after President Akufo-Addo promised to put his presidency on the line.

On the Big Issues on TV3, Murtala Mohammed insisted that because of the operations of small scale miners, government is unable to stop galamsey. He noted that many galamseyers act as though they were small scale miners. According to the MP there are so many illegal miners living in forests and pretending to be legal miners.

He added that government is in bed with these miners interestingly, Murtala called for a ban of 5 years on small scale mining so that government can really achieve her goal of halting galamsey. Berla Mundi tried to alert him that government has tried this before and yet failed. Yet, Murtala insisted that a ban of 5 years will be the only remedy. He added that political will and a temporary ban on small scale mining are the first steps in ending galamsey
