Support Gov’t To Secure Favourable IMF Bailout – Kwaku Kwarteng Tells Critics

Kwaku Kwarteng, Biography

Chairman of the Finance Committee in Parliament, Kweku Kwarteng has asked critics and members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to support the government in its quest to seek a favourable economic bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He says the debates on the robustness or otherwise of the Ghanaian economy is immaterial at this point as the country engages the IMF for the support.

Speaking on last Monday’s edition of the ‘Eyewitness News’ on Citi FM, Mr Kwarteng says critics should rather focus on coming out with suggestions that will make Ghana not return to the IMF ever again in its life.

“Why are we preoccupied with this? What kind of discussions do we want to have about the economy right now?

“I believe that our economy has been challenged but as we grow, we should learn and begin to have discussions that will make this 17th appearance, the last one.

“Why can’t we put those fundamental issues taking us to the IMF on the table? Why turn the debate into a blame game?  Let’s correct things and focus on having helpful debates”, he said.

The government of Ghana is expecting to secure some $3 billion from the IMF to resuscitate its ailing economy which has resulted in rising cost of living, rapid depreciation of the country’s currency and skyrocketing inflation rates.
