From last week, the name Aisha Huang, has become a chewing stick for Ghanaians. She is a Chinese galamsey Kingpin who has re-arrested. News has it that, she managed to sneak back to Ghana to continue her galamsey activities, despite been deported in 2018.
Following that, many Ghanaians have pointed accusing fingers on Ghana leaders on how she was able to sneak back into the country. With her saga, President Akufo-Addo added his voice to the sentiments expressed by Ghanaians. Yet it seems like his today, differs from what he said three years ago.
Akufo-Addo Utterances On Aisha Huang Arrest Today
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he is in doubt whether Chinese illegal miner Aisha Huang was deported from Ghana in 2018 as he has no confirmation on the actions taken by state actors.
Speaking on Stone City FM, the President who expressed uncertainty about the action taken by his appointees assured of a commitment to prosecute the illegal miner following her re-arrest.
“I’m not still sure whether she was in fact deported, or whether she fled the country the first time and has now come back. There still seems to be some uncertainty about it,” he said.
Akufo-Addo Utterances On Aisha Huang’s Deportation Three Years Ago; September 20, 2019
President Nana Akufo-Addo said that, government’s decision to deport Chinese national, Aisha Huang after her reported involvement in illegal mining was a mistake.
“I think the decision to deport Aisha Huang in hindsight was a mistake and that is why that process and procedure is being stopped,” he said at a forum at Princeton University during his visit to the United States of America.”
Aisha Huang gained some notoriety after her arrest in May 2017 and was tagged as the Galamsey Queen.
During the prosecution, the government controversially discontinued the case and deported her in December 2018.
More controversy followed when the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo, at a town hall meeting in the US suggested that Aisha Huang did not face the full rigours of the law for diplomatic reasons.
The Contradiction
The same President Akufo-Addo on 20th September 2019 , when he was interviewed outside the shores of Ghana admitted, that the decision to have deported Aisha Huang (GALAMSEY champion) on hindsight was a MISTAKE.
The same President, after almost 3 years is saying he’s not sure that Aisha Huang was deported.
Questions
Is the President really in charge? Or the people around him didn’t act on the orders to deport her.
Did President Akufo-Addo forget what he said three years ago on the same issue?
Now that the President has given full backing to the Attorney General (AG) to persecute her, won’t it be another mistake? Won’t it soil the diplomatic relations between Ghana and China?
