The issue of galamsey has emerged again as one of the most talked about topics in the country. The Akufo-Addo government has waged a number of raids to curb the illegality but so far nothing new has come from these measures. After assuming office, President Akufo-Addo mentioned that he was ready to put his presidency on the line to stop galamsey. Years on and many feel these were just mere words.
The resurfacing of Aisha Huang, a Chinese national in the country has revealed how porous the security of the country is. On TV3’s The Keypoints today, Saturday, September 10, 2022, lawyer Martin Kpebu questioned if Aisha Huang was even deported at all some years ago. According to Martin there are many high ranking officials in the country who have links to Aisha.
While speaking on the punishment for those caught in galamsey, Martin argued that the punishment must differ because there are people who are just in the washing while others are at the background financing and making the real money. He explained that after SHS he did galamsey in Tarkwa and as such can say that most of the boys on the field earn very little and shouldn’t be made to suffer same fate as the kingpins of the illegality.
Martin Kpebu recount how he and a number of young people earned very little on the mining site. “Imagine as a young after SHS and you are helping fetch water for the load to be washed and the police come and you hear scatter scatter” Martin narrated. Martin called for different punishments for those caught in galamsey.
It is interesting to know that despite the efforts the government claims to have invested in the clamp down galamsey, the trade has continued with many more people getting involved. Many hope to see Aisha Huang get punished for her involvement in galamsey. There is much pessimism here though because it is believed that she has links with government officials and might just be set free again.
