Over the past few days, a Chinese national Aisha Huang has been trending. Popularly called the galamsey queen, she was believed to have been deported some few years ago after being arrested. The government in 2018 had claimed that Ghana had a good relationship with China and thus wanted to settle the matter well. Aisha is in the news again and many are wondering what happened after her deportation.
Interestingly, it was reported that Aisha was bearing a Ghana Card and this raised issues as to why a non-Ghanaian is bearing such an important card when some Ghanaians were struggling to be registered. Well, in a communique, the National Identity Authority has responded to allegations against them. According to the NIA, Aisha Huang doesn’t bear a Ghana card but rather has a non-Citizen Ghana card which is usually given to non-Ghanaians in the country.
The NIA adds that Aisha first registered in 2014 and renewed in subsequent years. However, when she returned to Ghana against she sought to register using another name Ruixia Huang. However, her biometrics exposed her as it was seen to resemble that of Aisha Huang who registered in 2014 as En Huang. She was thus told she has to maintain her former name.
The NIA posits that her card was renewed and issued to her in August 2022 with the old details. According to the NIA, this card has seen been expunged from their system. They maintain that their database is robust and will not tolerate any case of duplication or manipulation from any personality.
This is welcoming news as many felt that the NIA had connived with Aisha to get her a Ghana card. Many say that Aisha has friends in high offices who protect her galamsey businesses. Government has received so much backlash for failing to halt the activities of Chinese and local galamseyers. It will be interesting to see what happens when Aisha appears in court on September 14.
