Good News For Ghana As Bagbin Is Elected President Of An International Association of 180 Nations

Alban Sumana Bagbin is the Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament. His election in Parliament saw a lot of wrangling as the 2 biggest political parties in Ghana fought over who to crown to oversee the Legislative arm of government. Born in 1957, Alban Bagbin is one of Ghana’s longest serving law makings. He has served as MP from the 1st to the 7th Parliaments. It wasn’t surprising then that he was elected by his colleagues to lead the House.

News coming in from the just ended Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Canada has it that Alban Bagbin has been elected as the new President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. This was after he unanimously won the votes of the over 180 Parliaments that make up the association. This means that Bagbin will move from his position as the current Vice President of the association to become the president.

This also means that Ghana will be hosting the 66th Conference of the association next year in September and Bagbin will have to preside. It wasn’t just Bagbin who got a high position. Interestingly, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu also emerged as the Vice Chairman of the Association. Osei Kyei will thus be assisting the Chairman, Ian Liddell-Grainger, a member of the UK House of Commons.

The 65th Conference in Canada saw an impressive Ghanaian presence as Haruna Iddrisu, Ahmed Ibrahim, Lydia Alhassan, Ama Dokua Asiamah and the clerk of Parliament, Cyril Nsiah were all present. With this new appointment, it means Alban Bagbin will need to maneuver his way with other duties. He will also have to show true leadership in Ghana’s Parliament as the eyes of commonwealth nations will also be watching to see a better example.

Congratulations to Speaker Alban Bagbin and Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu.
