If your man attempts to bring his smartphone or tablet into bed, you may want to discourage him-and not just because it kills the mood. A new study presented at the Virtual SLEEP 2020 conference discovered a link between evening and late-night exposure to light-emitting digital devices and poor sperm quality.
The study included 116 men ranging in age from 21 to 59 who were being evaluated at an Israeli fertility clinic.
The men were sent to a lab after filling out detailed questionnaires about their demographic, health, and sleep variables, as well as their daily exposure to digital media devices, to have samples of their sperm collected and analyzed within an hour.
It was discovered that frequent evening use of digital devices was linked to decreased sperm motility (the ability to ” swim” properly) and sperm concentration. According to the principal investigator, Amit Green, PhD, the head of research and development at the Sleep and Fatigue Institute at the Assuta Medical Center in Tel Aviv, smartphone use in the evening, tablet use after bedtime, and evening television use were all associated with a decrease in sperm concentration.
The study also discovered that men who slept for longer periods of time had more sperm total and better sperm motility, whereas those who slept more during the day had fewer total sperm numbers and a lower percentage of motile sperm.
