Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that rhetoric is ineffective in the fight against corruption. He argued that it needs to be combated through effective measures that the government should put in place. He claimed that the Akufo-Addo administration is doing this through using digitalization to combat corruption.
Dr. Bawumia stated, “The difficulties that we face as a nation are that we are largely undisciplined society, a corrupt society, a lawless society, an untrustworthy society, an ineffective government bureaucracy, a tax dodging society, an informal society, and nontransparent society.
“We observe these components in our society. Unfortunately, our nation lacks the data and systems necessary to monitor the prevalence of these factors that are harmful to our progress.”
“In fact, since Ghana gained its independence, successive governments have generally not prioritized developing systems to lower bribery and corruption, systems to improve the efficiency of public service delivery, systems to increase domestic revenue mobilization, and systems to generally make life easier for Ghanaians.”
Added he “Our government made the decision to bring light into the system in order to shed light on the issues we have been experiencing as a result.
“We have a digitalization policy in place for this reason. The system being developed by this administration will increase accountability, discipline, trustworthiness, and transparency. Systems are how you fight corruption; rhetoric is not how you fight corruption. We are issuing the Ghana Card in an effort to uniquely identify each person.”
