His real name is Carlos Henrique Casimiro. His surname was printed wrongly on his squad shirt as Casemiro when he started his career. His first performance was so good that he preferred not to jinx his form and persisted with the incorrect spelling.
At age three, his father left his mother Magda and never returned. He was compelled to assume the role of the family’s head of household early on and cater to his two younger siblings while his mother was abroad working long hours as a cleaner to support them.
All four of them couldn’t fit in their little shack so he would go to his aunt’s or grandmother’s house at night to sleep, so when he travelled to the big city to stay at the São Paulo’s training facility as a 14yo, it was the first time he had ever had a place to call his own.
Casemiro was introduced to football by a cousin. He was born in São Jose dos Campos, a city located two hours from São Paulo. Through football, he was able to escape the stress at home for a few hours each week.
In youth competitions, Neymar and Casemiro frequently squared off against one another – and the two even posed for a picture in 2003. The players were more comparable back then than they are now. Young Casemiro was also a very prolific scorer then.
At age 11, Casemiro was one of about 300 children from São José dos Campos who went for trials at São Paulo. Because he played as a striker, the most popular position, he had to lie when his name was called. He left his hand down as more than sixty hands went up.
They then inquired as to who played no. 10 – his other position. More hands were raised. Once more, he kept quiet. He recalls there being about nine defensive midfielders when requested. He raised his hand as he saw an opening and chose that role, and he never looked back.
Despite passing the trials, medicals revealed he had hepatitis A which forced him to miss 3 months. Casemiro put in a lot of effort to advance through the São Paulo’s youth ranks. From when he was 11, he demonstrated leadership traits and was the captain of the club’s youth sides.
Casemiro was being watched by scouts in Europe much before he became a Champions League superstar. He went to Old Trafford in Manchester for the Nike Cup two years in a row with Sao Paulo’s under-15 team.
Having always been committed to his family, he bought his mother a new home after signing his first professional contract at the age of 16. After an initial six-month loan period, Real Madrid reportedly paid a reported fee of €6 million in July 2013.
Before being promoted to Real Madrid’s main team for the 2013–14 season, Casemiro spent his first year in Spain playing for the Castilla. However, Casemiro only started playing a significant role for Real Madrid when he returned from a loan at Porto in 2015.
The Brazilian has since been indispensable in the midfield and formed a terrific partnership with Kroos and Modric whilst winning every trophy available.
In 2018, Casemiro started taking English classes to improve his communication skills. 4 years later and he will be playing in England. His life shows a player who thinks ahead and is always ready to fight and adapt.
