VAR official Mike Dean admits he made a mistake over Tottenham defender Cristian Romero’s hair-pull on Chelsea opponent Marc Cucurella. No action was taken over the incident which led to Harry Kane’s equaliser in the sixth minute of added time of the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
It sparked a major talking point and on review Dean, who retired as a referee after last season but has continued in a VAR role, accepts he made an error. Mike Dean who was on VAR duty in the game between Chelsea and Tottenham last weekend has admitted he got it wrong by not advising centre referee, Anthony Taylor to visit the monitor when Cristian Romero pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair in the build up to Harry Kane’s late equaliser.
Ivan Perisic’s corner kick was headed in by Kane in the 95th minute, but not before the scuffle that should have required the attention of Dean and Taylor.Â
Many footballers and former referees have come out to already criticise and condemn both Taylor and Dean for their decision-making during such a big fixture but the now-retired referee broke his silence in a stunning statement that was released only on Thursday via the Daily Mail.Â
Yet despite the explanation, Chelsea supporters still continue to demand that Taylor isn’t to be the referee for their games this season with their petition. “I’ve since studied the footage, spoken to other referees and, upon reflection, I should have asked Taylor to visit his pitch-side monitor to take a look for himself. The referee on field always has the final say.Â
