There is currently so much talk about the Law School entrance examinations. Last year this became a major issue after 499 students were denied admission into the school despite passing their examinations. Later President Akufo-Addo had to intervene and get the school to admit the students. This year to avert such a similar situation the law school has put in place certain policies.
Some of the policies include the inability of the students to request for the marking scheme or call for remarking of their papers. This undertaking has been tagged by many to be arbitrary. On Good Morning Ghana today, Friday, August 5, 2022 Okudzeto Ablakwa blasted the General Legal Council for infringing on the rights of prospective students. The North Tongu called for the students to boycott the papers.
Hon. Ablakwa told Dr. Randy Abbey that his colleague in Parliament Dr. Dominic Ayine had prepared a Private Members Bill to be presented before Parliament regarding the stripping of certain rights of the General Legal Council. Ablakwa pleaded with Bagbin to accept the bill and get the house to ratify it. The MP believes it is time the GLC is limited by an act of Parliament so as to open the Law School to everyone who is interested.
“Dr. Ayine has drafted a private members bill. We will have a bipartisan approach. The bill is far reaching, refreshing and positive and it is high time Parliament steps in. I will appeal to the Rt. Hon. Speaker to just admit it quickly and let’s pass new legislation that will totally overhaul this kangaroo system. Students should boycott and seek redress,” Ablakwa said.
Interestingly, there have been claims of biases on the side General Legal Council who many believe have their own choices when it comes to choosing candidates for the law school. Many lawyers have said the law school is a privileged profession for only a few and so have supported the stringent measures put in place by the GLC. This has forced many Ghanaians to countries like Gambia to study law.
Many eyes will be on Parliament to see if they can place a limitation on the GLC which for years has run riots in admissions. So far the Ghana Bar Association is yet to comment on this issue.
