Sam George is one of the vocal law makers in the country. He has been in the news recently over issues regarding the SIM registration process. Sam has been embroiled in a banter with Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Communications and Digitalization over the modalities for the registration. According to Sam George the new deadline will also fail.
Well, Sam George was today in the studios of Metro TV today, Tuesday, August 2, 2022 where he and Sylvester Tetteh, MP for Bortianor were hosted by Dr. Randy Abbey. On the vexed issue of the new measures put in by the General Legal Council, Sam George bemoaned the entire leadership of the association for being biased. According to Sam he is offended that the council will introduce measures like preventing students from knowing the pass mark and refusing to allow candidates call for a remark or ask for their papers after examinations.
The GLC has called on all aspiring law students to sign this undertaking before they sit for the exams. On Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Dr. Randy Abbey and Sylvester Tetteh complained about the matter. Prof. Azaar has even called for a boycott of the exams by the students. On the show, Sam George threw his support to those calling for a boycott. He explained that since the leadership of the GLC are placing impediments in the way he was also calling on law exam entrants not to show up and write the papers.
“How many Ghanaians can afford to do this programme? How many Ghanaians can go to Gambia to study? This is so unfair. What is this? They do these things and yet their children get free passes into the school. During the Covid-19 period they had Zoom lessons so there shouldn’t be a problem with infrastructure,” Sam George said
There have been allegations that despite these measures, relative and other friends of those in office always get the chance to enter the law. Last year about 499 students who had passed the exams were denied entry and it had to take the intervention of President Akufo-Addo to get them accepted.
The former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo in an interview said the law profession is a privileged profession. This was reiterated by lawyer Maurice Ampaw making people raise questions about whether these measures are deliberate to stifle potential lawyers. Yesterday in an interview on Joy News’ The Pulse, the President of the National Law Students Association, Hassan Asare mentioned that they are ready to go on a massive demonstration if things don’t change.
