Womens Africa Cup of Nation final in Morocco

Africa’s biggest football competition has reached the final part of the tournament and there is now a few days left until we know which country will walk away as the 2022 WACON champions. The event which started in 1991 has up to this point only had two countries taking home the trophy and this year a third country will be added to the list.

The final match is taking place this Saturday in Rabat at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium with the kick off at 22:00. It is a final like no other as host nation Morocco will be participating in their first WAFCON final and they will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana who will be playing in their fifth WAFCON final. The odds on the match have been put up at betway tz where you can go see the odds and place your bets on the match. The odds favour South Africa to win the title this year with a small margin at the moment. Below is the path both teams took to book their spot in the final.

Group Stage

Both teams have played very well to get to the final and both teams did not lose a single match in the run up to the final. The tournament started with 12 teams which were placed into three groups of four teams. Morocco was placed in Group A alongside; Burkina Faso, Uganda and Senegal. Lionesses of Atlas won all of their group stage matches to finish on top of Group A. South Africa was placed in Group C alongside current title holders Nigeria, Botswana and Burundi, Banyana Banyana also ended up on top Group C after the group stage matches.

Quarter finals

Morocco faced Botswana in their quarter finals match. A goal in the 3rd and 59th minute in the match was enough to overcome Botswana and send them into the semi final with the final score of the match 2-1. South Africa was up against Tunisia in their quarter final match and the only goal of the match which came in the 14th minute, sent Banayana into the semi finals of the tournament.

Semi finals

The semi finals were played earlier this week on Monday and both teams had tough teams to overcome. Morocco played Nigeria and the match went into penalty shootout where they managed to win 5-4. South Africa played against Zambia and scored the only goal of the match to win. The match for third place (Nigeria vs Zambia) will be played on Friday evening at 22:00.
