Ghanaians yesterday paid tribute to the late John Evans Atta Mills. The former president is remembered fondly by Ghanaians for his calm and honestly. He was nicknamed the man of peace. However, the celebration didn’t go without controversy as the previous days have seen a trade of words between Atta Mills’ brother and Koku Anyidoho, an aide to the former president. Both argued over the resting place of the former president.
In reacting to the tributes on Atta Mills, Nana Akomea, the Director at STC noted that Ghanaians are keeping up with tradition by saying all the good things about the dead. He mentioned that indeed Mills was a remarkable man but had his low points. On Good Morning Ghana today, Friday, July 22, 2022, Nana Akomea noted that the NDC during the time of Mills’ presidency tried covering the health of Mills.
“There was a consistent attempt by the NDC to paint Prof Mills in the best possible light, sometimes to the level of disbelief. You will not remember his presidency without remembering his health. One of my regrets was the consistent attempt to shield his health from Ghanaians. He also played along unfortunately. He gave the impression that he was a blow man,” Nana said.
He explained that Mills instead of being frank also played along on national TV as though he was in good health. Nana mentioned of the airport tarmac incident when the late Atta Mills trotted to show that he was healthy. Nana Akomea said this in the long run went against the former president because the issue turned political and distracted the country, while the president himself slowly lost his health.
Nana noted that aside this the former president was a man of peace and candor. He mentioned of how Atta Mills invited Kufuor while inaugurating some projects, something many presidents fail to do.
