How would feel going into a contest as an underdog? What this means is that you are most likely to be defeated. What it means is that you know your stance and it you are going to give your opponent another opportunity to celebrate a big victory. Underdogs normally come into competitions already defeated, down, and with a mentality that we have nothing to lose. What makes somebody the weaker opponent, an underdog? Simple, your history, your statistics.
Ghana goes to the 2022 world cup as the weakest opponent of its group. Of course, if you are going to face Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea, you will have to know you have an uphill task ahead of you. It is even more dire when you are not fully prepared and you are up against a side that looks it has it all. Looking at Ghana’s opponents, one may say they have some advantages but should that be conclusive? Perhaps yes, perhaps no.
Portugal has a wonderful team and can even boast of one of the greatest players that has ever graced the game, Christiano Ronaldo. You can always count on him to deliver. Portugal has beaten Ghana at the world cup in 2014 at the group stage. The popular adage says “once bitten, twice shy”. From the foregoing, history and teamwork favour the former European champions to carry the day when they come face-to-face with the Black Stars. Aside from that, infrastructure and preparation on Portugal’s side may be one of the best. Can we say same for Ghana?
Uruguay is force to reckon with in South America when it comes to football. The country has provided incredible players that you will always love to watch. Even though players like Luis Suarez, Cavani are at the twilight of their career, you can always count on them. Uruguay was the team that prevented Ghana and Africa from playing at their first ever world cup semi-finals. A lot of people will remember Luis Suarez for his courageous save his gave his country. From teamwork, to history, to individual brilliance, to preparation, Uruguay may be ahead. Will that determine the score line? I will try not answer.
South Korea remains the only team in Ghana’s group that they’ve never met. They have played some friendly matches and the results have been a balanced one. When you mention South Korea, you are naming one of the giants’ football nations in Asia. At the world cup, they have some good history even hosting it in 2002 together with Japan. Do they have great individual players, good preparation, teamwork? Yes!
If you look at the analysis, you can see that there are similarities among the nations in the group. Obviously every team that has qualified to the world cup deserves to be there. Now, what will separate some from the others? Attitude. Probably, Ghana may not have it all in comparison to what these other nations may have but they also have some good players, good history and if preparation goes well and with the right attitude, Ghana will book its place to the one-sixteenths. Remember Germany 2006.
