Last week negotiators from the International Monetary Fund met with their Ghanaian counterparts to work out a flexible path to Ghana’s economic recovery. This has become the case after government made a U-Turn despite taking a strong stand that they will not seek help from the financial institution. The IMF officials are expected to go back and deliberate on the possibility of assisting Ghana rebuild.
The IMF project that if help will come in terms of money it will be at the end of the first quarter of 2023. They called on Parliament to pass a syndicated loan of $1 billion to support the government for now. However, in a show of power, the Minority have refused to help pass this loan. At a workshop for NDC MPs in Ho, John Mahama noted that he and his MPs will not support any deal that will lead to more mishandling of funds on the part of the government.
John Mahama noted that any financial package has to be broken down with clear uses of those funds. He adds that without any clear laid down plan he will not encourage his MPs to support any financial plan in Parliament. He called for the renegotiation of loan packages that the government seeks to bring on board. The former president called on the government to stop the blame game and do what is expected of them. He maintained that this government has mismanaged Ghana and tagged this attitude as the highest form of irresponsibility.
