Food Crisis In SHS: Ibrahim Mahama Donates To Old School

The senior high school is in crisis following food shortage across the country. The situation has compelled some schools to shut down to avoid further encumbrances. In some schools, authorities had to ask parents to contribute GHC 500.00 each to cater for the feeding of the students.

The nationwide food shortage was first reported by Conference of Heads of Assisted High Schools (CHAHSS) in Upper West region. The association wrote to the regional director of education explaining to him how dire the situation was. They told him if nothing was done about the situation, all schools in the region would shut down to enable all students go home since they cannot feed them with nothing.

The regional director forwarded the petition to the Director General of Ghana Education Service for further.

In less than a week after the news was published, a renowned Ghanaian business tycoon and philanthropist, Dr. Ibrahim Mahama has gone to the aide of his old school, Tamale Senior High School. The brother of former president John Mahama presented over 1000 bags of rice, can fish, can tomatoes, dozens of groundnut paste and undisclosed amount to the school to remedy the situation. The items were presented to the school on Tuesday.

Presenting the items, Mr. Mahama acknowledged the difficulties the schools are going through as a result of non availability of foodstuff. He said he was moved by the reports to contribute his widows mite to salvage the situation in parts. He called on other benevolent individuals to help government in feeding the students.

The senior headmaster was appreciative to Dr. Mahama for the gesture. He said the donated items will go a long way to sustain the school for some time. He promised he and his teachers will continue to impart knowledge on the students under their care.

In a related development, the Ghana Education Service has said students should not go home due to the shortage of food. In a statement issued by the Director General, GES said it has contacted buffer stock and can confirm that there was adequate food in stock. He said in the coming weeks all schools will receive foodstuff.

If you were a parent, will you allow your ward to continue to stay in school while waiting for government to supply food? Will you agree to contribute GHC 500 to feed your child in school under free SHS? Use the comments section to share your thoughts.
