The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has provided a thorough education on Unpleasant Memories the Country Had experienced in engagement with the IMF and the World Bank.
Mr Kwesi Pratt who squeezed out his disappointment noted that after 16 different engagements with the IMF, the best he can recall is the worse and unpleasant memories. He also expressed shock in the decision by the Nana Akufo-Addo administration because he said they promised they will never take the country there.
Touching on specific examples he said just in recent years when Former President Mahama took Ghana to the IMF, he recalled that the IMF conditionality freezed any new employment for years. This he said affected young graduates who completed Schools and were looking for jobs. He also said quite apart from the graduate, the country at that time was in need of nurses and teachers to fill important spaces yet, the condition says you can’t employ them.
He made mentioned of retrenchment during the Rawlings era where the conditions said some workers had to be laid off. He also noted of the cash and carry system where unless you pay in cash you will not be treated at the hospital because a World Bank and IMF conditions says they country was giving out too many freebies.
He further recounted when the IMF and World Bank said the cedis has to be devalued. He said all these conditions never solved our problems.
According to him, all the memories are not good and he can’t understand why Ghana is still going back there the 17th time.
