Ghana is currently experiencing a demonstration from Arise Ghana group which has their reasons for demonstrating likely to the Kume Preko demonstration. Therefore, Obeng_News decided to go into history and tell the story of the famous Kume Preko demonstration again.
Arise Ghana is demonstrating because of the current hardships Ghanaians are going through under President Akufo-Addo. Likewise, the Kume Preko demonstration was organized in May 1995 because of the hardships Ghanaians were going through then under the late Jerry John Rawlings. Their other reason for demonstrating was against the imposition of Value Added Tax (VAT).
The Kume Preko demonstration was led and organized by Nana Akufo-Addo, Akoto Ampaw, Malik Kweku Baako, Kwesi Pratt Junior, Dr. Charles Wreko Brobbey, Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe, Kweku Opoku and they had about 100, 000 Ghanaians joined them. History says that the hardships during the time were dire such that some Ghanaians couldn’t afford one meal a day.
The Kume Preko demonstration started very peacefully but some assailants later opened tear gas on some of the demonstrators which saw some dead and others seriously injured. The frontrunners of this demonstration became very popular and some of them remain a key part of our politics now as Akufo-Addo is now the President.
