Checkout These Popular MP’s Accused Of Failing To Refund Overpaid Salaries

Three first-term Members of Parliament have been accused of failing to reimburse the state for excessive salary months after the Controller and Accountant General notified them.

The MPs in question are Sylvester Tetteh of Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, who reportedly took GH131,000, Stephen Jalulah, MP for Pru West, who allegedly grabbed GH119,000, and Alexander Gyan, MP for Kintampo South, who allegedly collected GH119,000.

In addition to their present wages as MPs, they earned compensation as past CEOs and DCEs. Since the notification, the fourth accused, Alhassan Iddi, MP for Salaga North, has repaid the overpaid amount of GH42,000.

The issue is currently being pursued by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability. “As we speak, some Members of Parliament who were former DCEs have accounts that continue to record payments of salaries as DCEs and also as MPs, and you can see from the document that the Auditor General has asked them to refund them.”

It is tough to hold the MPs responsible. This is a difficulty with payroll management. “Our payroll system has a huge discrepancy, and there needs to be a pragmatic step taken to address this anomaly,” ASEPA Executive Director Mensah Thompson stated.

Concerns have been raised about the payment of double wages to some members of the House of Representatives. The payment of double salaries to MPs arose in 2018 after it was alleged that several NDC MPs benefited from it while sitting as Members of Parliament and Ministers or Deputy Ministers.

25 MPs were first summoned to the police station, but 18 of them were later told to ignore the summons. Several of the suspected MPs were interrogated by the police as part of their investigation.
