“Last year, about 110,000 children dropped out before JHS 3 mainly due to the lack of a JHS in their community. Some 4,000 primary schools do not have a JHS due to lack of funds. In the north, 60% of schools lack a JHS. About GHC 2 billion is required here!”.
These are the words of Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Eduwatch. According to him, Ghana government needs another GHC 3.5 billion to construct more schools that are sited under trees across all parts of Ghana.
“Another GHC 3.5 billion is needed since 2018 to construct 5400 schools existing under trees and sheds, so poor rural children can learn in a decent environment and complete Basic School. ” He noted.
Meanwhile, the education expert and leader of think tank believes that the Ghana Christian Council has failed to champion the course to build more basic schools but are rather interested in building a national cathedral, which is a medium to long-time goal for the country.
He mentioned,
“No Clergyman has ever advocated the use of the Heritage Fund to construct the needed schools, as the children learn in the rain. Rather, the Christian Council of Ghana is busy advocating the use of the Heritage Fund, Ghana’s oil ‘susu’ money to construct a Cathedral, which is not bad but not aligned to Ghana’s medium to long-term development priorities. ”
