They Cut Off Their Fingers During Marriage As Dowry And Bride Price

Marriage is a union orchestrated by God himself since the creation of mankind. It’s one of the oldest unions on the planet.

However, marital ceremonies in the world differ in culture and history.

Depending on the history, culture, and tradition, a marital ceremony of a certain group might seem very alien to the other. However, marital ceremonies are often splendid regardless of the tribe, ethnicity, and culture. All over the world, a great value is placed on marriage.

A tribe called Dani in Papua Guinea in Indonesia has been practicing a very strange marital rite, instead of wearing rings on the finger during marital ceremonies in most cultures, the Dani tribe chops off their fingers and present them as dowries.

According to a Facebook page dubbed “The Tribe”;

“Dani tribe in Papua Guinea, Indonesia.

At marriage, a man must cut off the finger of his right hand and present it to the bride as a dowry for her..

And if he wants to divorce her, he cuts off two fingers of his left hand, but if he dies, his wife cuts off the ten fingers of her hand as a sign of her fidelity to him and that she will not marry a man after him. Whether you marry, divorce or die… there are fingers that must be cut off.”
