The WAFU zone B under-17 championships is currently underway and the Black Starlets of Ghana are hosting the Eaglets of Nigeria at the Cape Coast Sports stadium. Ghana conceded two goals from the first half with the Nigerians being confident upfront. At the start of the second half, the Ghanaian goalkeeper made another mistake by not punching the ball hard enough. He had earlier made a similar mistake causing the Ghanaian coach to substitute him.

After going down with three goals, the Ghanaians pulled one back through substitute Abdul Razak. The Nigerians scored their fourth from a corner kick. Ghana had her second consolation from a spot kick. Ghana is hosting the tournament and will have to redeem themselves against Togo in the next encounter. Ghana is lying bottom in the group and will have to win convincingly in the next match.

The Black Starlets have very promising individuals and could do great things when they get things right. Taking a critical look at the match, what couldn’t work for the team was coordination. They couldn’t play as a team despite some players being so brilliant on the day. One thing that had an effect on the team was the inadequate time for the team to prepare. About 20 players from 28 that the coach had assembled were disqualified from the team through the MRI scan. The Nigerians dominated the play and were purposeful in attack. Ghana will have to solidify their defence in subsequent matches considering how poor they were in this match.

The WAFU zone B matches continue tomorrow with some exciting matches.
