The Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, CCT-GH, is worried about the long silence of President Akufo-Addo’s government as far as the payment of Cost of Living Allowance is concerned. The teacher union described it as a deafening silence that is too loud to be desired.Â
In a press statement released on 9th June 2022 by the head of Communications of the union, and sighted by Bricy Boateng, Mr. Adokwei Ayikwi-Awulley noted that the Coalition made its first call for the payment of COLA to public sector workers, especially teachers way back in November 2021 to the Minister in charge at the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
However, despite several other letters sent to the appropriate authorities together with other labour unions in education, nothing was forthcoming. Meanwhile, in 2022 this year, the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, TUC also reiterated the need for COLA to be paid to public sector workers.
According to the Coalition, in spite of the incessant increment in fuel prices coupled with high rate of inflation hovering around 24 percent, public sector workers have not experienced any significant pay rise. This has brought an untold hardship on public sector workers. The statement added.Â
Significantly, the teacher union has therefore threatened to embark on an industrial action by laying off their tools should their call for COLA is not adhered to by June 30, 2022. However, in a related development, the Fair Wages And Salaries Commission, FWSC has hinted on meeting with the unions in education and other stakeholders over possible payment of COLA.Â
