Times Are Hard But We Have GHc 25, 000, 000 To Support Nana Addo’s Promise To God

This is a short narrative of what is happening under the Nana Addo-led administration. The President, Vice President, and the Minister of Finance have constantly reminded Ghanaians that Ghana is broke and as such, Ghanaians must fasten their belts. With respect to this, the government as compared to the erstwhile administration, faced less resistance from the Ghanaian citizenry when they decided to impose the burdensome and regressive tax of all times, the electronic transfer levy, on Ghanaians.

The extent to which the country was broken was clearly exposed by how the FInance Minister and Members of Parliament in the Majority caucus had to fight their way through for the e-levy, which will generate a meager GHc 6 billion to the country, to be passed.

Despite this visible broke state of the economy of Ghana, the Finance Minister today has released a whooping GHc 25 million as donation or support to the National Cathedral fund. The money which was disbursed by the Finance Minister was described as seed money (money that is used to start a business or activity). Many people have called out the Finance Minister especially when he justified the non-payment of the several arrears owed to NABCO, LEAP, District Assembly Commun Funds, National Service Personnel allowance, and Teacher Training allowance amongst others.

Ghanaians are finding it hard to understand why the Finance Minister has to drain the country’s coffers just to fulfill the “so-called promise” of a President who has obviously disappointed Ghanaians in his second term in office. The idea of building the National Cathedral was very laudable and received with much joy when

1) The economy was in a partly growing state

2) The Immediate past General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong confirmed in his own words that the government will not use state funds to resource the construction of the National Cathedral.

“No one has the said government is building Cathedral for Christians. Nana Addo called the top pastors saying this is what he wants and he will facilitate the provision of land. No one has said he is building for the church. We should understand this well. The church will look for the money to build the church. He only said he will like it. “, Adom online 2018
