Is Government’s flagship employment program NABCO in ruins?

The Nations Builders Corps (NABCO) is one of the major programs of the ruling government to address the unemployment issues plaguing the youths of this country. It was one of their major campaign messages. It was one of the reasons why the NPP won the last general elections. But judging from current happenings, it is just becoming like one of those campaign promises used to win votes and nothing else.

A lot of Ghanaian youths were enrolled on the 7 different modules of the NABCO program for 3 years with the promise of permanent employment when the opportunity becomes available. They were to be paid 700 cedis monthly allowance. The initial 3-year module of the program has ended 7 months ago and some of the beneficiaries were asked to stay on till further notice. Others were asked to go home. One major issue that plagued the program is the non-payment of the allowances. Sometimes the allowances delay for so many months. How are they expecting these young people to feed and cater for those that depend on them? The amount is inadequate and on top of that, it delays unnecessarily. Government officials were always paid on time and these people are left in despair.

Can you imagine that those who have been asked to stay on for the last 7 months have not been paid? Which minister or government appointee hasn’t received their salaries for the past 7 months? Your guess is as good as mine. Look at the huge amounts they are paid compared to the paltry sums of the NABCO beneficiaries. Are we moving forward or going backwards? Only time will tell.
