The 2022 Fifa World Cup will be the first of its kind to be held in the Middle East, the first to be held in a different time of the year ( November / December) and yet, the first to have women referees at the center of the action.
The list of referees, which was released by FIFA included 6 female referees. Of the six, 3 (Stéphanie Frappart from France, Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan) would be at the center of the action while the other 3 (Neuza Back from Brazil, Karen DÃaz Medina from Mexico and Kathryn Nesbitt from USA) would also be assistant referees.
Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga for the record, will become the first African female Referee to officiate a World Cup match. A milestone any African, especially women would be proud of.
In a male dominant world, some players and fans are of the view that women / female referees are soft, lenient and are easily walked ober by male players.
Unfortunately, that has not been the case sp far with female referees, especially for Salima Mukansanga. She has stood her ground when she has to and insisted the right things are done in matches she has officiated so far.
In a way, she takes no “nonsense” from players while being respectful at the same time. We expected such resilience to be repeated by Salima Mukansanga as she takes the world stage.
Among other matches which she has officiated includes officiating at the Olympics, 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, African Women’s Cup Of Nations and CAF Women’s Champions League.
We wish Salima all the best in her task ahead, and we hope she exceeds expectations.
