Ukrainian War And Covid-19 Are Not The Causes Of Ghana’s Problems

Former President John Mahama addressed the nation on 2nd May as he promised. In a post shared on his Facebook page, the former president had announced that he was going to give a lecture on the economy dubbed Ghana At Crossroads.

“Our country is, sadly, at a Crossroad, and demands that leadership listens to the people and acts appropriately. This is the surest way to success on our chosen national journey of democracy and opportunities for all. Ghana must be placed fully unto the desired road.

On Monday May 02, 2022, I will be speaking on Ghana at a Crossroad, live on Facebook John Dramani Mahama, YouTube (@johnmahamatv) Channels, across a number of national radio and television channels and on other digital platforms”

On Monday, 2nd May, the NDC presidential candidate in the last two elections mounted the podium as expected and delivered a one and half hour lecture. He took Ghanaians through how Nana Akufo Addo used lofty promises to deceive Ghanaians into voting for him even though the NDC was doing well. He said this party while in opposition promised to move Ghana from taxation to production when voted into power. However after the electorates were hoodwinked into voting for them, they decided to drop the idea and instead, chase wealth, nation capture, corruption, nepotism, cronyism and plain thievery thereby destroying the economy.

John Mahama was worried the Nana Addo government will blame everyone except itself for the bad economic state. He said Ghana’s economic outlook was already showing a downturn even before the emergence of Covid 19 and Ukrainian war yet they are blamed alongside Mahama for the poor economy.

Mr. Mahama said covid 19 affected the whole world and some countries managed it better than Ghana yet their economies are doing good.

In a charged atmosphere, the only surviving NDC former head of state said the next NDC Government will repeal the controversial E-Levy act when voted into office in 2025. He said the E Levy is a lazy man’s approach to raising revenue and it serves no purpose. He promised to go after corrupt government officials and retrieve all stolen monies which far outweighs the amount E Levy raises in a year.

Mahama explained that the auditor general’s report showed that at least 12 billion Ghana Cedis was misapplied in the year 2020 alone. This he said is twice the amount E Levy was initially expected to raise in a year and thrice the new expectation.

He suggested 13 ways of resolving the current economic meltdown and encouraged the government to tap into the NDC’s ideas for the betterment of Ghana as a whole.

Do you think E Levy will be repealed if NDC is voted back to power? Do you think NPP government will tap into the ideas of NDC? Take to the comments section to share your thoughts on these
