Popular Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has revealed that he did some of his most daring works under John Mahama’s regime and he never feared for his life as today.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, 4th May 2022, Manasseh Azure wrote;
“I did some of the most daring works in the John Mahama era, and I never feared for my life as today. The danger is real!.”
The comments of Manasseh Azure comes as a background to the current Press Freedom Ranking which has seen Ghana dropped 30 places backward. In 2021 Ghana was placed 30th in the global list of countries with the best press freedom but in 2022, Ghana placed 60th.
Manasseh in a separate post also wrote,
“SADDEST PART: Some journalists in Ghana today are too scared to speak about the oppression they face in their work.”
He also wrote that, “I have been doing journalism since Kufuor. And, in my view, Akufo-Addo’s era is the worst for journalists in Ghana.”
Reporters Without Borders said in the new press freedom ranking index released that “to protect their jobs and their security, they increasingly resort to self-censorship, as the government shows itself intolerant of criticism,”.
