DV and DP Plates Misuse, Offenders To Be Arrested And Punished

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is warning of the arrest and punishment of motorists who have been misusing trade plates – Defective Vehicle (DV) and Direct from Port (DP) plates.

The Authority says it is going to launch a nationwide joint exercise with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to catch and prosecute those breaking road traffic regulations by driving vehicles with expired trade plates.

According to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, the Defective Vehicle trade license is valid for a period of one year and only in relation to a specific motor vehicle for which the license was issued.

It has however been noticed that some motor vehicles are still carrying 2021 DV plates.

Not only that motor vehicles bearing trade plates are also being used to ferry fare-paying passengers, transportation of goods and for hiring purposes in clear breach of the road traffic regulation 38 (8) which only authorizes the carrying of passengers who are engaged in the testing or inspecting the motor vehicle with the goal of buying the vehicle.

There are also situations where motor vehicles which are supposed to be used under trade plates do not affix the trade plates on the front or rear of the vehicle in violation of the road traffic regulation.

The driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority also made a reference to the practice by some car dealers or fleet owners where movements of motor vehicles with trade plates are not captured in the trade license logbook.

It reminded everybody that the Direct from Port (DP) plates are for a specific period – must not be used beyond the stipulated period of two weeks.

The misuse of these trade plates is not going to be allowed to continue and offenders could face severe sanctions serving in jail.
