The race to who leads the ruling New Patriotic Party in the next elections is heating up. It is almost 2 and half years to the next elections but tensions are rising in the party as to who leads the party in the next elections. As it is with Ghana’s politics since 1992, any political party is given 2 terms after which they are kicked out. With the 8-year tenure of the NPP coming to an end, can they break the 8?
Featuring among the 6 contenders will be Joe Ghartey, Boakye Agyarko, Akoto Afriyie, Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen and Mahamudu Bawumia. Others may likely join this race but many don’t expect much from them or even the first 4 mentioned above. The race will however come down to a 2 horse race with Trades Minister, Alan Kyerematen going head to head with Bawumia in a fight that might end up breaking the party or importantly uniting them.
Aside these 2 contestants, Paul Adom Otchere, host of Good evening Ghana feels that Kennedy Agyapong might be the one to look out for. He argues that Kennedy is intelligent and financially endowed and might end up being the king maker of the 2 leading contestants.
Paul argues that Kennedy is being forced by certain people to contest though the Assin Central MP is not really interested in the competition himself. Paul avers that Kennedy who has resisted government appointments will in the end prefer to sit back and criticize when things are bad than to contest and win power.
It is important to know that Kennedy’s chances are indeed slim, and yet he will be a key determiner of who wins. His support for any candidate will be instrumental. Recent polls and surveys have pointed to an NPP defeat in 2024. The party will need to present a new face, market the person and slug it out with a desperate opposition who want to return to power.
