On May 2, 2011, after years of hunting, Osama bin Laden was found and killed by US special forces.
American soldiers broke into a large house in Abbottabad, Pakistan, at night. In previous months, the CIA observed a tall, thin, bearded man who regularly walked between the high walls of the complex, and nicknamed him “the walker”. They thought it was Osama bin Laden. As early as September 2010, the intelligence services believed they have found the mastermind of the September 11 attacks. They followed an al-Qaeda courier. First, a missile strike was considered, but made positive identification of the leader of al-Qaeda difficult. So a second option was preferred, with a helicopter raid and then broke his house.
On arrival on site, one of the two helicopters crashed on landing, but without causing any casualties. Reinforcements were dispatched to recover the team on board. There was no video image from inside the complex. The White House broadcasted an image that had become famous, where Barack Obama was seen, following the operation, alongside his advisers, but also Joe Biden, and the head of counter-terrorism of the American president, John Brennan. Bin Laden’s body was thrown by the Americans into the open sea, so as not to offer him a burial.
It is notably thanks to a man that Bin Laden was flushed out in Pakistan. Doctor Shakeel Afridi helped the CIA by organizing a fake Hepatitis C vaccination campaign, and thus obtaining a DNA sample from a person living in Osama bin Laden’s residence. But in Pakistan, this doctor is considered a traitor. For 10 years, he has been imprisoned, in solitary confinement. His family says he walks in circles in his two-by-two-meter cell and does push-ups from time to time. The only book he can read is the Koran.
Today, in Pakistan, we remember the ruse of the Americans, with their vaccination campaign. As a result, many parents are defiant of vaccines and refuse to have their children vaccinated against diseases like polio.
What did you hear about Osama Bin Laden? Did he live a good legacy?
