The government has been urged to be transparent and prudent with its expenditure of proceeds from the Electronic Transaction Levy [e-levy]. A leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Charles Bissue says that the agitations from Ghanaians since the passage of the levy and its subsequent implementation which began today should signal the government that much is expected of it for taking these monies.
In his view, the government would be served a hefty blow should it err in management of the proceeds of the levy. On Asaase Radios, the Forum show, Mr Bissue charged the government to be conscious about its expenditure from the levy, given the assurances and expectations of the people.
“Yes, there has been some tension with the implementation of the e-levy…and that should prick the conscience of the government to assure Ghanaians that things will be done right. We need to use the resources judiciously. In the end, it is the Ghanaian who benefits.”
He recommended an education program to be developed to enable the government to engage taxpayers and Ghanaians in general on the collection of the levy and its usage. That, he is convinced will deepen confidence and build trust with the government, in respect of the implementation and sustainability of the e-levy.
The early hours of the implementation of the e-levy have been marked with some concerns from users of digital payment platforms. Some Ghanaians are generally not pleased with the quantum of monies charged per transaction.
A campaign was waged the previous day to get a majority of users of these electronic cash payment platforms to empty their accounts so they avoid paying the levy. The panic withdrawals had actually affected businesses, especially for vendors and merchants of these platforms.
