Men are awesome at falling asleep. After a long day of work, we are able to just shut down and zonk out. Women, on the other hand, seem to be more resistant to sleep. A study by the University of Hertfordshire in England found that after making love, men fall asleep in two minutes. Women, however, stay awake for up to an hour.
The reason men fall asleep after sex is that the body releases high levels of the hormone prolactin, which makes us feel relaxed and sleepy. This drop in testosterone levels during orgasm is even greater if a man has been abstaining from sex for a while. The resulting hormonal imbalance leads to a desire for sleep.Â
Women, on the other hand, don’t experience an increase in prolactin after orgasm. Instead, their bodies release more of the hormone oxytocin, often known as the “love drug,” which facilitates feelings of trust and attachment between two people. For this reason, women are more likely to want to cuddle and chat with their partner after sex than fall asleep and some might even want to repeat the experience again.
