Dr. Richard Amoako-Baah, a Political Scientist, says the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not be making a smart political move, should the party’s delegates decide that former President John Dramani Mahama should lead them to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He is warning that the party risks losing the general election, if the former president who had twice been rejected by Ghanaian voters is retained as the NDC’s flagbearer.
Dr. Amoako-Baah explains that the expectations of the people have largely not been met by the Akufo-Addo-led government, but the truth remains that John Mahama, is not the right man they are going to trust with their votes.
They have experienced his leadership and he certainly does not have what it takes to turn things around.
“There are many people in the NDC and so why would you present the same candidate.”
The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) has forecast election victory for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections but says this can only happen if the party is led to the elections by a fresh candidate and not former President John Dramani Mahama.
“The former President is reportedly considering running again but we expect the opposition NDC to try to revitalize its prospects with a fresh candidate.”
The EIU based its election forecast on anti-incumbency factors, which it noted could favor the largest opposition party.
The EIU does not see former President Mahama as any longer an electoral asset to the NDC.
A senior lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Dr. Etse Sikanku, however, says it is going to be hugely difficult for anybody in the NDC to beat John Mahama in the race for the party’s presidential ticket.
It doesn’t look as if the National Democratic Congress is considering to change their flagbearer.
